Cavities are formed when the bacteria in the mouth feed on the left over food found on or trapped between the teeth. The bacteria that thrive in the teeth produce acids that break down the tooth enamel resulting in tooth decay or cavity. These acids break away the protective enamel layer of the teeth and in due course expose the dentin layer of the tooth which consists of the dental nerves. The toothache that we feel is due to the dental nerves being exposed to hot and cold water. Cavities, even though commonly occur in children it can also be found in young, middle as well as older adults.

Dr. Peter Spennato, the renowned dentist states that as the cavity develops, the deterioration gets near the nerve which in turn may cause pain. This gets increasingly worse particularly with contact to cold, heat, drinks or sweet foods as well as water. If left ignores, a cavity can cause the tooth to falloff considerably. Ultimately, unrestrained deterioration may put an end to the tooth totally. There is also the risk of increasing infection linked to an abscess when the infection extents to the source of the tooth.
Dr. Peter Spennato says that cavities are a consequence of retained dental plaque on the tooth surface and poor oral hygiene. Particular bacteria present in dental plaque cause deterioration. Since, cavities can enter deep into the tooth structure as far as the nerve; one may also experience sensitivity with definite foods and drinks. This is why Dr. Spennato says that prevention is always easier than treatment, so making the right changes in diet and taking on healthy oral hygiene practices will go a long way.
Brushing is very important to prevent cavities as brushing does two things. Firstly, the bristles present in the toothbrushes remove any food remaining on the teeth regularly. Some more advanced toothbrushes can even remove food stuck in between the teeth so that flossing will no longer be required. Secondly, the fluoride that is present in toothpaste covers the teeth and fortifies the enamel of the tooth. This will make it tougher for cavities to enter the enamel of the tooth. In addition, brushing can prevent bad odor and can give a fresh feel. Moreover, one should avoid munching on chips, candy and other types of snacks that are high in carbohydrates and sugar. Instead, try to stick to balanced and healthy meals. If you feel like snacking, opt for fruits and vegetables over processed foods.

But when you begin to feel the early signs, they are actually not that early any longer since these are signal that the cavity has advanced.
