Traditional Chinese medicines are made composed of a wide range of herbs, animal tissues, minerals, and natural products. But only a few of these medicines are known to common man outside the Chinese community. There are some Chinese herbs that every physician should know about. You can counsel your curious patients, the more you know about these herbs.

Here are a few Chinese herbal medicines every doctor should know about:

  • Ma Huang (EPHEDRA)

To induce sweating or treat asthma, Chinese practitioners use this herbal medicine. But they do not use it as a single agent and not for weight loss. If you use it for weight loss, you can feel adverse events. For inducing hypertension, tremors, insomnia, palpitations, and restlessness. Chinese herbal medicine also doesn’t recommend it for fatigue, although it is a stimulant.

  • Fu Zi (ACONITE)

This is a very important hot herb and is also known as Wu Tou, Cao Wu, or Chan Wu in Chinese. If someone is suffering from severe cold, Chinese practitioners prescribe it. It also can cure a certain type of arthritic pain.

  • Huang Qi (ASTRAGALUS)

Qi or life energy is increased by this drug and is widely used as immune system builder. It is not used for preventing colds or other common diseases. Athletes can use it for enhancing their performance.

  • Ren Shen (PANAX GINSENG)

This is a Chinese herb used widely in America. Ginseng can boost energy, enhance the immune system, and fix fatigue. It can be useful for some people and in some it mightn’t so better go through Chinese diagnosis. People also can have hypertension using it. It also can exacerbate headaches, rashes, and insomnia.

  • Da Huang (RHUBARD ROOT/RHIZOME)

In China, this medicine is commonly given for blood stagnation and excess heat that happens due to constipation. But this herb can cause diarrhea, cramping in the abdomen and also abdominal pain. But its effects are laxative.
