Value of Allergy Tests: Why You Should Get Allergy Testing Done

Allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction from a specific allergen, according to the center for disease control and prevention almost 50 million Americans get allergies every year. Often people are misled on the idea of suffering from colds or a cough without noticing that they are suffering from an allergic reaction.

Allergies are often a result of your immune system battling a substance that is recognized by your body as harmful and foreign. Most of these substances are germs, bacteria, and viruses that cause some effect in your body that might be dangerous. Determining what kind of substance that triggered your allergic reaction can be quite difficult especially that each and every individual interacts with multiple of substances every day.

That is why the value of allergy test during these times is variable in determining what allergen is contributing on these multiple symptoms you are experiencing. People around the world have suffered from allergies, typically around 30% to 40% of the world’s population have endured some allergic reactions.

Common Allergy Symptoms

Individuals who are experiencing symptoms for more than seven to ten days need to be checked immediately in order to evaluate what type of allergies they are experiencing. Runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing or itchy, and watery eyes are some common symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Without proper testing it is impossible to identify the cause of an allergic reaction. Testing is important in order to identify what triggers the allergic reaction. People who are properly diagnosed can now proceed to treatment that is planned and being executed.

Reasons why you should get the testing done

First and most important reason why allergy tests are carried out is that allergies can be fatal to your health, there are allergies that can be manageable and can be treated through medications but there are also allergic reactions that are life threatening and that is Anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a type of reaction where you are hypersensitive to the ingestion or injection of substance to your body through a form of protein or drug. This type of reaction when not noticed or diagnose could lead to serious problems even death.

Second, if you are tested early you can be prepared for future seasonal allergies, you can manage your allergies though some medications and keep you from experiencing worst episodes of allergies that could weaken your immune system.

How do skin test works?

There are two ways of skin test, the first type of skin test is done by a simple prick on the surface of the skin, it is performed on the back or the forearm. Suspected substances are tested to your skin all at once and if redness and swelling at the test areas it appears you are allergic and need to proceed to medication in order to contain those reactions. The second type of test is through blood work, this often called RAST, CAP-RAST or specific lgE, in this type of test a doctor or a nurse will be requesting for the total amount of lgE in your blood to identify the allergen that is triggering the symptoms. With all the results gathered the doctor then can proceed to medications and could give you advice on how to avoid yourself from those substances and keep you from experiencing the adverse reactions of the allergy.

How long does it take to get both test result?

Some skin test results can be obtained after 20 minutes from the time of testing and a lot more cheaper than a blood test. However, blood tests are a lot more helpful for it only involves one single needle incision but it will take a few days in order for you to get the results.
